New Brighton study offers hope for more inclusive, accessible festivals

As the summer festival season comes to an end, èצӰÏñ researchers have created a plan to transform festival experiences for marginalised groups.

10 September 2025

The new study on inclusive festival programming sets out a roadmap for organisers to make festivals more welcoming for underrepresented groups while still delivering the sense of novelty and magic that audiences crave.

The research recommends for inclusivity to be considered across all aspects of an event; from promotion, ticketing, and physical accessibility to programming and content, towards creating a more holistic experience for all festival goers.

The research has been led by Dr Adam Jones and Dr Mandy Curtis from the university’s School of Business and Law.

Central to their research is the idea of “glimmer opportunities” which are small but powerful moments of euphoria that delight and connect audiences. These can be as simple as a community lantern parade lighting up a winter night, or as profound as an installation that sparks awe and togetherness in a familiar public space. Such glimmers, the study found, are not just enjoyable; they are what transform festivals into memorable, participatory and repeatable experiences.

Dr Mandy Curtis, who is also a member of the at the èצӰÏñ, said: “Festivals are not just about entertainment. They can change how people feel, connect, and see the world. By being more inclusive and offering moments of wonder, festivals can create experiences that people want to return to.”

Dr Adam Jones, Director of the university’s Help to Grow Management programme and co-lead on the study said: “This is a great opportunity to use our research to support those in the creative sector in delivering to all. It aligns so closely with our ethos here at the èצӰÏñ of working creatively and in partnership to support equality and diversity in all we do. It is at the heart of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in reducing inequalities and fostering societies where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.”

The findings of the study will be presented at the on Friday 12 September at the èצӰÏñ. The annual conference is aimed at developing professional skills for those involved in the festival industry, including producers, local authorities, and event organisers. This year’s conference will feature workshop sessions as well as a keynote speech from celebrated events producer and current director of the Eurovision Song Contest, Martin Green CBE.

The conference will equip participants with both practical strategies and imaginative frameworks for designing festivals that are not only inclusive but also sustainable, impactful and unforgettable.
